DePuy hip implants may be failing at a rate of up to 49%. One major concern is metallosis which can cause permanent tissue damage, nerve damage, brain damage and damage to vital organs. In August 2010, a recall was issued by DePuy, a division of Johnson & Johnson, for the company's ASR (Articular Surface Replacement) Hip Resurfacing System and ASRXL Acetabular System total hip replacement, following reports of higher than normal failure rate.
